Nature management in the Broekpolder

Making improvements for wildlife doesn't have to be complicated. For the municipality of Vlaardingen, we worked on a clear wildlife management plan to increase diversity in the Broekpolder.

The Broekpolder is a wildlife and recreation area in Vlaardingen. It used to be a peat meadow polder with a number of dairy farmers, and it was later decided that houses should be built in the polder. The ground was raised with dredged material, but this polluted soil turned out not to be a good basis for construction. That is why the area was partly planted with production forest and otherwise returned to nature. It is now a beloved nature and recreation area for the people in Vlaardingen and an important link in strengthening nature in and around the city.

Biodiversity

The municipality of Vlaardingen has ambitions to increase biodiversity in this area. Wildlife management used to be too ad hoc and that is why we were asked to draw up a wildlife management plan. We analysed the area extensively and entered into discussions with area parties such as the Broekpolder Federation, the residents of Vlaardingen and various local water authority, nature and environmental organisations. This resulted in a vision on development and wildlife management: a clear map with practical management measures to strengthen nature in the Broekpolder.
